  • Q. Covid-19 Testing?

    A. There are two kinds of tests that are available for COVID-19: the viral tests and the antibody tests.

    • COVID-19 Swab (Molecular/PCR) Test – For those who currently have symptoms of COVID-19.
    This test is needed to identify the presence of the SARS-Cov-2 virus that causes the Covid-19 disease. The testing consists of a long swab to collect material from the back of the nose where it meets the throat. A positive result indicates that the virus’s genetic material is present whereas a negative result indicates that the virus that causes the COVID-19 disease was not found in the sample.

    • COVID-19 Antibody (Serology) Tests – For those who recently had or think they had COVID-19.
    An antibody test is a blood test that helps to detect antibodies e.g. immunoglobulins, IgG and IgM against the coronavirus that causes the disease COVID-19. Antibodies are proteins produced by the immune system that acts to respond to infections and are specific to a particular infection. They are found in the liquid part of blood samples, which is called the plasma, depending on the presence of clotting factors. IgM and IgG may either be ordered together or separately.

    Having an antibody test is helpful if:
    • You may have been exposed to the coronavirus which causes COVID19 based on your current or previous signs and symptoms (e.g. fever, cough, difficulty breathing);
    • You live in or have recently travelled to a place where transmission COVID-19 transmission has occur;
    • You have been in close contact with an individual suspected of or confirmed to have COVID-19; or
    • You have recovered from COVID-19.

  • Q. Antibody Test for IgG.

    A. This test detects IgG antibodies that develops in patients within 7 to 10 days after symptoms of COVID-19 starts. The IgG antibodies remain in the blood after an infection has passed. These antibodies will indicate whether or not you have contracted the virus in the past and developed antibodies against it which may protect you from future infection.

  • Q. Antibody Test for IgM.

    A. The IgM is the first antibody that is produced by the immune system when the virus is contracted. A positive IgM test means that you may have been infected and your immune system has started to respond to the virus. When IgM is detected, you may still be infected or have recently recovered from a COVID-19 infection.
